Did Greg mention pictures? Well I happen to know who has a couple.
Late morning of the Lansing tournament, I and my partner found ourselves in the general vicinity of our fearless President and his fearless partner. Fishing was a little slow for our boat and we were starting to nod off. We were both hoping that something exciting would happen to wake us up. To our rescue – SNAKES!!!!!
As it turns out our fearless President and his fearless partner are not so fearless when it comes to snakes and it just so happened that every snake in Allamakee County was on their side of the river. There was this near constant chatter coming from their boat along the lines of – “IS THAT A SNAKE?!?!?!”, “YES!!!”, “DON’T LET IT IN THE BOAT!!!!!” - “IS THAT A SNAKE?!?!?!”, “No, it’s a stick”, “DON’T LET IT IN THE BOAT!!!!!”.
Then it happened – one tried to come in the boat over the transom. Suddenly, the voices got a lot higher pitched, the fishing poles got set down and the attempt to keep the snake out of the boat went into action. They quickly prevented the snake from coming in the boat but the snake was wore out from the skirmish and decided to rest by wrapping itself around the trim/tilt cylinder of Doug’s motor.
The snake was still way to close for Doug and Greg, so phase two of the operation went into full swing. They obviously had not planned for this so there was a lot of trial and error going on. As good fellow club members we stayed on the other side of the river to observe since we did not want to be accused of interfering with a fellow club members fishing and risk being disqualified. We were ready with the VHF radio in case we had to call for help and we also did what any other good club member would do – we got out the camera!!!
The first picture is of Greg trying to size up the problem (and the snake) and Doug looking for a tool to help with the dislodging. They tried many things to dislodge the snake including motoring around (see the second picture). As they were doing so, Doug, in his most trusting voice said to us “Don’t take our spot, we will be back.”. Well, I was laughing so hard at this point that there was no way I could safely drive to take their spot.
Finally after about 25 minutes they were successful. They were obviously very happy given the hugging and dancing that was going on in the front of the boat. Doug claimed that the snake was at least 6 feet long with 4 inch fangs. From our vantage point, it looked more like it was a foot long and had forgot to put in it’s dentures that morning.
Thanks for the entertainment guys – we did not get sleepy the rest of the day.
