CVWC STORM LAKE TOURNAMENT REPORT

Post by Limit »

The first CVWC tournament of the year was a good one. We had a total of 40 walleyes weighed-in, which almost beats the 50 fish weighed-in at all five CVWC tournaments last year. Average weight per walleye was 1.36 lbs, with a total fish weight of 54.54 lbs.

On Storm Lake there is a protected slot between 17"-22". Thus all walleyes between 17"-22" had to be released and anglers were only allowed to keep fish that measured 15" to just under 17" and two walleyes over 22". We only had two walleyes weighed that were over the 22" mark and both were caught by the winning team of Jaymie Bral & Kurt Miller of Storm Lake. Being our clubs first slot tournament, to my knowledge, it was not about catching the larger fish in the system, but the right sized fish and hoping for an over fish or two. There were reports of teams catching double digit numbers of slot fish during the tournament and prefishing. And even if teams did not get lucky enough to get the right bites they still caught good numbers of slot and under fish.

The primary presentation that prevailed for the top finishing teams was rigging live bait in and near the deeper water of the dredge cuts. Make sure to make it to the May monthly meeting to hear more details of how the top teams caught their fish.

Along with great fishing the weather was perfect as well. Earlier in the week the weather forecast was predicting 25-35 mph winds with steady rain, which was right on for Friday when a few teams were prefishing while the majority of teams decided the day would be better spent at the local watering holes because of the nasty weather. But on tournament day the sun came out of behind the clouds at take-off and we had mostly sunny skies with highs in the mid 60s and a light east wind at around 10 mph.

Results:
1st Place: Jaymie Bral & Kurt Miller of Storm Lake with 3 fish for 9.60 lbs
2nd Place: Bob Henderson & Matt Johaness of Spirit Lake with 5 fish for 6.32 lbs
3rd Place: Doug Bonwell & Greg Mahlstedt of Cedar Falls with 5 fish for 6.22 lbs
4th Place: Carl Teske & Vern Fisher of Waterloo with 4 fish for 5.54 lbs
Participation Drawing: Trent Schneck & Brice Thompson of Waterloo
20 Teams Total

All in all it was a great tournament. Slot tournaments are not the easiest for tournament anglers, but when you are consistently catching and netting fish it makes for a fun day and that is what we are trying to accomplish. Also, this tournament made $836 for the club from entry fees and new memberships.

Sounds like the Tournament went well and a good number of fish brought in, wish I could have been there.
Looking at the points tally, there must have been around 20 teams?
