CLEAR LAKE TOURNAMENT REPORT

Post by Limit »

Well the CVWC tournament anglers must have upset the fishing Gods this year because we can’t seem to get a break when it comes to the weather and the bites. Pool 10 Tournament: 20 degrees at take-off and no fish brought to the scales. Storm Lake Tournament: highs in the low 40s, NW wind 25-35 mph, and we missed the suicide bite by a week. Clear Lake Tournament: highs in the 40s, north wind 15-25, steady rain the entire day, and a pretty good prefishing bite turned off from the cold front and dropping water temps. The water temp dropped from 62-58 Friday into Saturday. This was by far the worst weather I have fished in a CVWC tournament, COLD, WET, & WINDY!!! At 9am I was shivering and my hands were so cold I could barely tie a knot and/or put bait on a hook. Well enough of the sob story.
We had 15 boats and 29 brave and hardy anglers bring 9 legal fish to the scales. For 5th place with one fish for 1.34 lbs was the team of Kyle Colbert & Adam Bentz. For 4th place with one fish for 1.88 lbs was the team of Jim Allen & Jim Kobliska. For 3rd place with two fish for 2.44 lbs was the team of Todd & Harry Borwig. For 2nd place with two fish for 2.72 lbs was the team of Tony Jochumsen & Jim Dengler. For 1st place with two fish for 3.12 lbs was the team of Jeff & Darwin Heltibridle and their first CVWC Tournament Win! Congrats to all the top teams and thanks to all the anglers that fished the tournament and supported the club! Sounds like there were various techniques that the top teams used to catch their fish. Most teams were rigging livebait to catch their fish, but some teams were trolling crankbaits. Make sure to attend the June monthly meeting to hear in-depth how the top team caught their fish!
On the way home from the tournament I saw something great. I passed the team of Dave Asche & George Schaefers pulled over on the side of the road helping a stranded motorist with a flat tire. After fishing all day in the rain ,wind, and cold; not bringing a fish to the scales; and still having to drive 2-3 hours home these guys were gracious enough to stop and help the driver change the flat tire. Class act guys and it’s an honor to have you was club members! If you see these guys anytime tell them nice job.
